How to Handle Long Layover with the Kids at the Airport

Generally, flight layovers can happen at some point when you travel, but with kids around you, you have got to look for ways to keep them from being fussed up and create a commotion at the airport and, instead, cook up some constructive activities to tie them down for the long layover.

The advantage of technological devices

Technological devices can be lifesavers for a sudden layover announcement, so be ready to bring out your available devices, like smartphone, portable DVD players, tablets, headphones, etc. for your kids to be busy playing with non-violent games or watch a child friendly movie or hear music with the headphone and smartphone or read an e-book through the tablet or even go with them for some quality family photos around the airport.

Enjoy a walk around the airport

Most international airports, especially the top ones, have first class amenities, such as restaurants, duty free shops, souvenir shops, massage and spa facilities, a museum, upper deck for plane-watching, and many more; therefore, having these facilities are reasons to bring the kids and make an airport tour, enjoying the whole duration of the layover period, discovering all the airport facilities and services and even take some souvenir shots to some of these facilities.

Have a picnic at the airport

Kids will always be hungry from time to time and with a long layover, they are bound to feel real hungry, so take creativity time to make a short picnic in the airport, pull out together your travel shawls and spread them over the airport floor and let the kids sit down and have a snack or meal, while you make use of the time to talk over your travel itinerary or simply enjoy the chat while passing time.

Try a scavenger hunt game

A scavenger hunt game would be an interesting and enjoyable game idea in the airport, during the layover, but this can be played for as long as you are assured that the airport is safe and that your kids are already teenagers, and, for sure, your kids will have a fun time scavenging for items which you list down for them to find at the gate or outside the tarmac or to any of the airport locations.

Go to a hotel

When the layover is an overnight layover, the best option is to bring the kids to a hotel for an energizing pool swim before hitting to bed for a good night’s sleep, making use of the travel respite in a hotel, so all your kids will be energized for their next travel journey.
